I like to work in mixed media: usually with watercolours, acrylics, pastels and papers. I’ll use whatever seems appropriate to translate the image in my imagination.

- I have been painting since my daughter, Emma Jean, was born but have loved art for as long as I can remember. After a career in translation and language teaching I gave it all up to become a full-time mother in 2002. Although thrilled to be a mum, I suffered from post-natal depression and I began to paint as a form of therapy. Many of my paintings express the tension of conflicting strong emotions from great joy to frustration and fear. The more representational work asks us to look at the world around us with an inquiring eye. Our interpretation of what is around us is as important as what we physically see. “The human mind is a powerful pattern-recognition machine,” writes James Gleick, a scientist specialising in chaos theory, “Sometimes it is too powerful; it detects patterns where they do not really exist.” As children, we have all seen patterns in passing clouds or in flickering firelight, yet nature is not random either, patterns are repeated throughout. What is it that we are looking at? Come with me on this emotional and spiritual journey. I hope you enjoy looking at these paintings as much as I have enjoyed creating them.
